MAKING IT SPECIAL ~ for MOTHER'S DAY
THE POTTI TEAM BLOG
| Special art from my daughter |
As children we knew
that the things we made by hand were the best.
We delighted in these labors of love, and were especially careful to
make gifts and cards for those who mattered to us the most. Birthdays, Valentine's Day, and especially
Mother's Day saw the results of our very best efforts. But somewhere along the way, we decided that
our art and handmade gifts lacked the polish, the beauty, or the sophistication
(if not in word, we thought this in concept) of store-bought items. We began to give the same gifts, and
especially the same store-bought greeting cards that everyone else gave.
While it is true
that we are not equally talented at drawing or sewing or sculpting, there are
other ways to personalize a gift - to essentially do it yourself. Gifts of homemade goodies, jellies and jams, basket-filled collections of personal favorites assembled to pamper the recipient (chocolates, coffees, bath
toiletries…) - these are gifts that still have a personal touch. And when we come to greeting cards, you can
offer the unique, made priceless by authenticity; actually write the sentiment
that you feel, rather than try to fit someone else's words to your own
relationship. Your mission? To create a work that simply can't be
discarded. If we are really honest, it
is the handmade ones, even from our children, that we find ourselves tucking
away in that special drawer or file labeled "Save."
My grandmother
painted watercolor flowers on birthday cards, and I assure you that those are
among the treasures I have saved. I tend to make collages, and I believe they are easier for those who
do not have that flair for painting or drawing.
I have a stack of romantic magazines from which I clip especially for
valentines, but greeting cards are easily constructed with scrapbook supplies
and a plethora of vintage bric-a-brac.
Photos, vintage post cards, and book pages I prefer to scan and print,
using the print in my collage rather than the actual vintage item. That is, of course, a matter of taste and
value.
My interest in
buttons is rooted in childhood days when my grandmother allowed me to make
collages from her button collection and homemade paste (flour and water). There are endless additional options for
creativity - paper beads or small unstrung beads, ribbon, lace, fabric
swatches, small envelopes for pockets, jewelry destash or small
brooches.
So embrace your
inner child, check out some of the supplies available from the Potti Team and
show your love in your own way this Mothers' Day!
The recipients need not be limited to your mother.
Consider also your aunt, sister, daughter, a nurturing friend, or maybe that special lady who wanted to be a mother, and just didn't get the chance.
